The Foreigner (2017) Review: Jackie Chan’s Dark, Emotional Revenge Story

The Foreigner

This movie surprised me with how emotional and intense it turned out to be — easily one of Jackie Chan’s most serious roles.

Review

This one is actually really good.

Jackie Chan never disappoints. I don’t care how old he gets or what role he’s playing — he always delivers. And in The Foreigner, he brings a serious, emotional performance that hits harder than I expected.

The movie starts off intense. Quan is dropping off his daughter to meet friends when a sudden accident happens, and moments later a bomb goes off. That explosion kills 12 people — including his daughter. From that moment on, you can feel the pain and anger driving him. He’s completely devastated… and he’s not about to let this go.

Instead of sitting back and accepting what happened, Quan decides to take matters into his own hands. He’s determined to find out who was responsible, no matter what it costs him.

What makes this movie hit differently is that Quan isn’t just some random guy. He’s a former special forces operator and war veteran, and once he switches into survival mode, things get real fast. The story pulls you into a dangerous web involving government officials, terrorist groups, betrayals, and secrets that keep stacking up.

There’s tension almost the entire time. You’re constantly wondering who’s lying, who’s about to get exposed, and how far Quan is willing to go for justice. The action scenes aren’t flashy just for the sake of being flashy — they actually serve the story, which I appreciated.

By the end, everything comes full circle in a way that feels intense, satisfying, and emotional. It’s not your typical Jackie Chan comedy-action film. This one is darker, heavier, and way more serious — and honestly, that’s what makes it stand out.

If you like revenge-driven thrillers, political drama mixed with action, and emotional storylines, this is definitely worth watching.

StreamerScene Rating:

Rating: 4 out of 5.
Recommendation: Highly Recommended — emotional, intense, and one of Jackie Chan’s strongest serious performances.
